Check your Home for Drafts

Using a hand-held thermometer, make sure you check in all rooms of your home. Look for openings around windows, doors, and vents as well as the fireplace area. If there are any gaps in walls or ceilings that could let cold air in during winter months, now is the time to address them before they become bigger problems later on!

Find out where these drafts are coming from so you can take action if necessary. For example: if there's an opening near an A/C unit or another part of your heating system (such as ductwork), then seal it up with caulk or weather stripping; if there's a hole where water pipes go through walls (or ceilings), then fill it with insulation foam; etc.

Clean out your Fireplace and Chimney

Clean out your fireplace and chimney before and using it. Don't use the fireplace if there is a fire hazard in your home, such as lit candles or cigarettes left unattended near an open flame (even though they may be safe if used properly). This also includes gas appliances that could damage your house's foundation if left running overnight with no one around to monitor them. If you're unsure whether something poses a risk, call an expert who can give you advice on what to do before continuing with any project involving electricity or gas lines!

Check your Gutters and Downspouts

Make sure they're working properly to direct water away from the foundation, which can lead to flooding in the basement. If you have clogged gutters, hire a professional to clean them out.

Inspect Window and Door Screens for Tears, Wear Spots, or Holes

Replace any torn screens with new ones that are the same size and style as those in your home. Replace damaged or missing screws with new ones of the same type as they are made today. Apply silicone caulk to any holes or gaps in the frame if there are any large spaces between windows or doors.

Re-caulk around Window Trim, and apply new Weather Stripping around exterior doors as needed to Prevent Air Leaks

Caulk is a sealant that can be used for many things, including sealing cracks in windows and doors. Caulking around pipes, vents and other openings will help prevent air leaks during the winter season.

If you have been neglecting your caulking job this year (we've all done it), now is the time to make sure your home is as safe as possible. Water-proof caulk works best here because it will not break down like silicone would over time. The best way to do this task is by using a brush or foam applicator tool along with a few different colors of caulk—you'll want to paint two or three coats on each side of each piece before sealing them off tightly with duct tape or other alternatives.* Apply new weather stripping around exterior doors: Make sure there are no gaps where cold air can find its way into your house through cracks around door frames during winter months!

Use a Humidifier, especially if you have Wood Floors, which can Shrink and Warp in winter's Low Humidity

If you have wood floors, consider using a humidifier. Wood absorbs moisture from the air and can shrink and warp in low humidity. A humidifier will help prevent this from happening by increasing the relative humidity of your home—the amount of water vapor in the air compared to its dryness (known as absolute humidity).

In addition to helping prevent respiratory problems, wintertime is also a great time to get out with friends or family members who might otherwise be too cold outside. The gentle warmth provided by a stovetop heater doesn't have to be high-tech; some electric heaters work just fine!

Keep Fire Extinguishers on Each Floor of your Home and make sure everyone in the house knows how to use them

If you don't have a fire extinguisher, get one as soon as possible. There are plenty of places where you can buy them: hardware stores, sporting goods stores, or online at Amazon or eBay for example!

The best way to use an extinguisher is by holding it up high and pointing it at the source of combustion (the thing that's burning). This will keep the fire from spreading further into your space so that you can put out any flames before they spread too much damage throughout your home or business premises."

Keeping Warm is important but it is also important to keep your Home Safe while doing so

It’s a great time of year to check for drafts and make sure your home is safe. We hope these tips will help you keep your home safe and warm this winter.

  • Check windows and doors for drafts.
  • Make sure you have working smoke detectors.
  • Check the fireplace and chimney for carbon monoxide leaks or safety issues like cracks or broken lintels (the top piece of metal that holds up the chimney).
