Upgrading your House Security Systems adds many benefits to your lifestyle and security. The New Nest Security Camera can be installed inside or outside your house depending on its model. The Nest camera can be installed for indoor as well as outdoor purposes. No matter which camera model you chose to buy, the basic installation process includes the same.

In this article, we will guide you on how to Install a Nest Camera by yourself.

These are the main steps that you need to follow:

  1. You should set up the Camera through the Nest App.
  2. Pick a Location for the Camera.
  3. Install the Camera

All the Nest Cameras use a power cord which should be plugged into a nearby electrical outlet. You can also use an extension cord if necessary. The camera uses Wi-Fi to stream videos, so it's essential to test the video quality at your chosen location just to make sure that streaming has no issues.

Tools you'll require:

  • Drill-driver with screwdriver bit
  • 1/2-inch drill bit
  • 3/32-inch drill bit
  • A Pencil
  • Exterior caulk

If you think the process is complicated or you need help with the installation, feel free to contact QuickGenie. Our highly-experienced technicians can help install the security system faster and better. Meanwhile, you can just sit back and relax!

Installing a Nest Cam Indoor or IQ Indoor Camera

Each indoor camera model comes with a stand that allows it to be placed on any horizontal surface. Using the included mounting plate, they can also be mounted on a wall or ceiling. Its strong built-in magnet allows it to be stuck to any metal surface. Furthermore, the IQ Indoor model can be mounted to any tripod compatible with it.

Step 1: Setting Up the Camera

In order to set up the Nest camera, you must have the Nest app installed on your smartphone. Ensure both the camera and the phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Plug the camera power cord into the Nest camera and a wall outlet. The camera should turn on.

  1. Open the Nest app; then select Settings.
  2. Select Add Product.
  3. Scan the camera's QR code, using your phone.
  4. Take note of the camera's serial number and entry key; this will help you troubleshoot.
  5. Enter a location name for the camera; for example, "Backyard" or "Front Gate."

Step 2: Test the Camera's Video

Make sure the video works by plugging in the camera and holding it in the desired installation location. Test the video signal using the Nest app. Ultimately, the camera should provide clear video. Try different camera locations until you get a satisfactory video if there is no video. The camera might need to be moved closer to your Wi-Fi device, but that might not take too long.

Step 3: Mount the Camera

Place the Nest Indoor Cam on a horizontal surface (using the stand) or mount it to a metal surface (using the magnet), and installation is complete. Use a drill driver to drive three screws through the slots in the mounting plate and mount the camera to a wall or ceiling. These self-tapping screws don't need pilot holes or wall anchors. Screws should only be tightened nearly snug, avoiding over-tightening and stripping the screws.

Note: For brick, concrete, or block surfaces, drill a pilot hole first, then install masonry anchors for each screw, before mounting the plate.

Installing a Nest Cam Outdoor or IQ Outdoor Camera

Nest Cam Outdoor and IQ Outdoor cameras are installed similarly to their indoor counterparts. IQ models must be plugged into indoor outlets, while the Outdoor model can be plugged into an outdoor outlet. The power cord on the Outdoor model includes a power adapter that must be mounted to a wall.

Step 1: Setting Up the Camera

In order to set up the Nest camera, you must have the Nest app installed on your smartphone. Ensure both the camera and the phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

  1. Plug the camera power cord into the Nest camera and a wall outlet. The camera should turn on.
  2. Open the Nest app; then select Settings.
  3. Select Add Product.
  4. Scan the camera's QR code, using your phone.
  5. Take note of the camera's serial number and entry key; this will help you troubleshoot.
  6. Enter a location name for the camera; for example, "Backyard" or "Front Gate."
  7. Make sure that the video stream is working.

Step 2: Test the Location of the Camera

Make sure to have the video streaming tested at the desired outdoor location before drilling any holes or mounting the camera permanently.

  1. Bring the camera outside and plug it into a nearby outdoor outlet.
  2. Keep the camera in the exact location where you would like to install it.
  3. Test the camera's video streaming on your phone. If the video works, you can proceed to the camera installation. If the video is not working, look for other locations until the video is satisfactory. Start with nearby locations; you may not have to move it far to get it to work.

Step 3: Route the Power Cord

As long as the cord is long enough to reach an outdoor outlet, the Nest Cam Outdoor model's power cord can remain entirely outside. IQ Outdoor models feature an attic air vent, which you can use to route the cable through if you want to run it indoors. If you have an indoor model or an IQ Outdoor model, you can drill a hole in the exterior wall to run the cable through. With an IQ Outdoor model, you can place the hole behind the camera base so the cable and the hole both remain hidden when the camera is installed.

Choose the best route for the power cable and the location of the access hole for the cable, if applicable. Using the drill driver and a 1/2-inch bit, drill a hole 1/2-inch deep through the exterior wall and interior wall surface. For masonry walls, use a masonry bit.

Important: Before drilling an access hole, check that there is no wiring or plumbing inside the wall.

Step 4: Mounting the Camera Base

If you wish to mount the Nest Cam Outdoor on a wood or masonry wall, you will need to use the different mounting plate that comes with the camera. It has a magnetic base that simply sticks to outdoor metal surfaces. For the Outdoor model, a separate power adapter mounting plate is included. A plate is required for mounting IQ Outdoor cameras. IQ Outdoor cameras do not come with an adapter.

To mount an Outdoor or Outdoor IQ camera base to a wood or masonry wall, make sure to follow the following steps:

  1. Hold the mounting plate against the wall and mark through the screw holes with a pencil.
  2. Drill pilot holes at the marks, using a 3/32-inch bit. If the surface is masonry, use a masonry bit to drill larger pilot holes, and install masonry anchors in the holes.
  3. Install a bead of exterior caulk around the perimeter of the mounting plate, along its backside, leaving a small gap at the bottom for moisture to drain.
  4. Place the plate on the surface and attach it with the provided screws.
  5. Install the adapter plate (for Outdoor models only), using the single provided screw; use an anchor for masonry walls.

Step 5: Complete the Installation

The power cord can be painted after installation, but not the camera unit or the power adapter (Outdoor model only).

  1. Provide the power cable through the access hole from the inside of the wall.
  2. Plug the power cable into the camera.
  3. Attach the camera to the base: The Outdoor model is attached to its base with a magnet; the IQ Outdoor model clicks into place.
  4. Fit the power cable adapter onto its mounting plate (Outdoor model only).
  5. Use the cable clips provided to connect the power cable to the wall and/or ceiling surfaces, as necessary.
  6. Seal the cable access hole with exterior caulk, if necessary.
  7. Connect the power cable to an interior or exterior wall outlet.

Important Note: If you connect an outdoor model camera to an exterior outlet, it should be covered with a weatherproof "in use" outlet cover. The outlet should be a GFCI (ground-fault circuit-interrupter) type, which is required for all outdoor outlets.
