Your laptop may be freezing or hanging. It’s a common problem, and there are several things you can do to fix it. Read on for the full list of steps!
If you are looking for any installation/repair/consultation for your devices such as MacBook, Windows Laptops, Computers, Smart Home Products, TV Mounting, Home Security Devices, Networking, or/and more, please feel free to get in touch with us.
Restart Your Laptop
- Restart your laptop. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds, then release it. The laptop should turn off and restart itself.
- If you're using a Windows operating system, restarting your computer is easy: just press Ctrl+Alt+Delete (or hold down these keys and click "Restart"). You may have to wait a few minutes until Windows finishes starting up again; be patient!
- If you're using an Apple device like an iPad or iPhone, hold down both Volume Up and Home buttons until you see Start Turn Off in iTunes on screen—then release both buttons before releasing the Home button again with one finger while continuing to press Volume Up with two fingers simultaneously until iTunes shuts down completely (it will prompt users if they need help).
Install Operating System Updates
- Install operating system updates.
- Turn off auto updates and check for updates manually.
- Check for updates regularly to ensure that you're running the latest operating system version, which can prevent problems from occurring in the first place.
Clear Your Cache
Clearing your cache can help with many problems, including the freezing of your laptop. The cache is a temporary storage area for frequently used files, like webpages and images. Clearing this space frees up memory for other things, which means that you'll be able to use your computer without lag or freezing. To clear the cache of Windows Laptop:
- Press Win+R on Windows 10 (or Start > Settings > Apps & features) to open a run box
- In the Run dialog box that opens, enter %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\.lnk in the search textbox and click Enter>OK if it appears in blue (it might not appear at first)
Check Startup Apps
The first thing you should do is uninstall any apps that you don't use. This is an easy way to get rid of any unnecessary files in your startup folder and speed up the overall performance of your laptop. To do this, open File Explorer (or a similar file manager) and look for "Startup Apps" on the left side under Tools > Folder Options > View tab. Click on this option, then select "Apps" from the drop-down menu on the left side of the window to see all installed programs listed here; scroll down until you find what's causing your laptop freezing issues—if it’s something like Chrome or Firefox then disable them by selecting them from the list before clicking “Delete” button there (if needed). If you have more than one program installed here then choose one at random so they aren't all deleted together; when done make sure everything else looks fine enough before proceeding further!
Now if we take another look at our Startup Programs list: we can see how many different items were installed during the installation process which might lead us into thinking whether some of them could be slowing down our system even though they're not supposed to be doing anything too heavy-duty yet."
Add More RAM
RAM is the memory used to store programs and data. It keeps your computer running, so if your laptop is freezing up, it's likely that you're running out of RAM.
Adding more RAM will help prevent this from happening in the future by keeping things flowing smoothly. But how much RAM do I need? That depends on what you use your laptop for and how often you plan on doing it—for example:
- If you play games often, then adding more might be beneficial since games tend to take up a lot of system resources like processor power and hard drive space (and can also cause lag). You should also make sure that there aren't any other programs running in the background that may cause problems when they try accessing those resources; malware could be one culprit here!
- If video editing is something that happens often then perhaps adding more might be beneficial as well; although again this depends on what type of editing software is being used here too (especially since some apps use multiple cores).
Check Your Hard Drive
First and foremost, your laptop's hard drive might be damaged. If you're using an SSD (solid state drive), it is possible for the drive to fail if it's full of data. To check if your hard drive is full:
- Open up File Explorer or Finder on your computer and navigate to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\.MacOS\Oracle_Home
- Look for an app called 'Oracle_Home' in there; this should list all of the apps that are installed on your machine
Check these things to see if they are causing your laptop to freeze or hang
- Restart your laptop. If the problem persists, try restarting your computer and see if it helps.
- Install operating system updates. Make sure that you have all of the latest updates for your operating system installed on your computer. This can help prevent issues like freezing and hanging when using apps or playing games that require high-performance graphics performance such as gaming titles like Fortnite or League of Legends (LOL).
- Clear cache memory in Windows 10/8/7: If there are multiple programs running in the background while playing games or doing other tasks then they may be taking up some space which is slowing down the performance of your device so it starts freezing randomly sometimes even without any reason at all but if we want to fix this issue then the first thing would be clearing out those unnecessary files from RAM so let's do that now!
- Check Startup Programs: One way to check out if one particular program is causing problems is by checking its active state before closing down completely instead try disabling them one by one until you find out which ones are responsible for causing hang-ups whenever they get loaded up again later on downstream through some other means such as downloading files onto hard drives etcetera...
If none of these solutions are working, you may need a hard reset. This will eliminate all programs and files but will keep your data safe. If you want to do this yourself, follow the steps in our guide on how to perform a hard reset on an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro laptop.
