MacBook's Keyboard Isn't Working? Here's How to Fix It!

QuickGenie (Exceptional Handyman & Tech Services Delivered to Your Doorstep in California, U.S.)

Occasionally, the keys on a MacBook Pro keyboard stop working, either all of them or some of them. A software issue is likely to be the cause of a malfunctioning Touch Bar. To fix your keyboard, you'll need to clean it, check for updates, and remove any potential problem apps. The majority of these fixes also work on MacBook Air keyboards.

A working keyboard is required for some of these fixes. Borrow a keyboard if you don't have one. Your Mac probably needs to be repaired if you connect a second keyboard and it doesn't work either.

Most of the common causes for a MacBook Keyboard to stop working are dust and other contaminants. Especially, if you have a MacBook with keys using Apple’s butterfly keyboard mechanism, even the smallest amount of dust contamination can lead to major problems.

Here are the Common Reasons for a MacBook Keyboard to Stop Working

  • Dust and Other Contaminants
  • Invalid Software Settings
  • Apps that Cause Problems
  • Bugs and Errors
  • Hardware Issues

Steps to Follow When Your MacBook's Keyboard isn't Working!

Note: If the Keyboard issue still exists after following all the following steps, please make sure to contact Apple for professional assistance or any repair center.

1. Clean the Keyboard

MacBook keyboards are most commonly malfunctioned due to dust and other debris, so be sure to clean your keyboard thoroughly. Apple recommends the following procedure:

  • Place the MacBook's base 75 degrees from the floor or table.
  • Blow between the keys in a left-to-right and top-to-bottom pattern using compressed air with a straw to guide the pressurized air.
  • You should rotate the MacBook so that the right side faces down at a 75-degree angle.
  • Follow the same pattern of blowing top-to-bottom and left-to-right as before.
  • The left side of the MacBook should now be facing down, and still at a 75-degree angle.
  • Continue blowing in the same manner.

2. Plug in the MacBook

A low battery may prevent the keyboard from working, and the low battery alert may not appear. Check the keyboard after the MacBook has been charged.

3. Check for Updates

Connect a USB keyboard or wireless keyboard and check for updates as usual. See if the keyboard works after updating any drivers or operating system updates on your MacBook.

4. Remove Recent Apps

You might be experiencing this problem because you installed one or more apps right before it started. Try uninstalling any apps you recently installed, restarting your MacBook, and then checking the keyboard.

5. Restart the Touch Bar

If the Touch Bar on your MacBook Pro keyboard isn't working, you can usually fix it using the terminal. Here’s how that works:

  • Type terminal into Spotlight, or open it via Finder > Applications > Utilities.
  • With the Terminal open, type sudo pkill TouchBarServer; and press enter.
  • Type sudo killall “ControlStrip”; and press enter.
  • Enter your password and press enter.
  • The Touch Bar shuts down and restarts.

6. Check the Keyboard Layout Settings

Keyboard keys won't function correctly if you have the wrong keyboard layout set. Check by following these steps:

Open the Apple menu.

  • Navigate to System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources.
  • Select the Show Input menu in the menu bar.
  • Open the Input menu and select the correct keyboard layout for your region and language.

Note: If the Keyboard issue still exists after following all the following steps, please make sure to contact Apple for professional assistance or any repair center.
